ASHEBORO NC (ACME NEWS) - Police are investigating a shooting that occured in earlier this afternoon in Asheboro. Police, CSI, and detectives are actively investigating the scene of a shooting at the intersection of S McCrary St and Dixon Ave. According to an official with the Asheboro Police Department two males had an argument on Dixon Avenue in Asheboro after approaching each other on the street.  Police say one of the males produced a gun and fired multiple shots at the other.  The victim fled the scene and officers say they do not believe he was hit. Officers have a juvenile suspect detained and they say they are continuing to gather information. ASHEBORO NC - Police say the found drugs and a gun in the vehicle of a man with active warrants during a traffic stop near Asheboro last week. According to information from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on August 27th, 2021 deputies were called to assist the NC Highway Patrol. Troopers had pulled over a vehicle on I-73/74 near the Spero Rd. exit. Police say they identified the driver as Brandon Jamal Weaks. Police searched the vehicle and say the located marijuana, schedule II controlled substances, paraphernalia and a firearm. Weaks was placed under arrest and a check through Randolph County 911 found that Weaks had and Outstanding Order for Arrest for Failure to Appear out of Guilford County. ASHEBORO NC – Police are saying that “Unsafe Footwear” is to blame after an elderly driver lost control, drove through the lawn next to the historic courthouse, before crashing into a stairwell. On August 25th, just after 2 PM, emergency crews were called to 145 Worth St in Asheboro near the historic courthouse for a report of a vehicle that had hit the building. When they arrived, they found a 2014 Toyota SUV with its airbags deployed wedged in the stairwell next to the courthouse. ASHEBORO NC - Ken Jennings, the man who won 74 consecutive game of Jeopardy! is set to speak in Asheboro this weekend. A recent rule change removed the five consecutive games limit for winners which led to Jennings going on a 74-game victory streak winning an estimated $2.52 million. In 2020, he beat out Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer in the “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time." Acme News ASHEBORO NC (ACME NEWS) - A vehicle chase which started in Asheboro ended in an arrest this evening. The Asheboro Police Department was not immediately available to comment. From 911 radio traffic we know the chase started in or near Asheboro and wound up on I-73/74 SB going for over 20 miles into Montgomery County, and reaching speeds of 120mph. Asheboro Police Department, Deputies with the Randolph & Montgomery County Sheriffs Office, and State Troopers with the NC Highway patrol were all involved. Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WRC) at the NC Zoo provides free, professional veterinary and rehabilitation services to sick, injured, or orphaned native North Carolina animals. The goal for the animals they treat is to be returned to the wild in a condition that will optimize their chances of survival after release. According to the NC Zoo the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is the only one of its kind in U.S. zoos. The WRC is not open to the public, the animals in its care need as little human contact as possiable for a successful release into the wild. ASHEBORO NC - Police arrested a suspect they say robbed a man at gunpoint on the side of the road in Asheboro last week. Just before noon on Wednesday, August 04th, 2021, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to the intersection of Brewer St and Spring St in Asheboro, after getting a call about an armed robbery. According to a police report when officers arrived they spoke with the victim who who told them a black Buick had stopped beside him while he was walking. That's when the victim said a black male subject got out from the front driver's side with a small black pistol and put it to his head and stated "don't move, don't move or ill kill you." Any student who was enrolled at the College between March 13, 2020 (the start of the COVID-19 pandemic) until the end of the Summer 2021 semester was eligible for the assistance. In addition to paying off outstanding student account balances, RCC has been able to help students through the pandemic by providing emergency financial assistance for such needs as food, housing, laptops, and internet access. (Scott Pelkey / Acme News) ASHEBORO NC - Today we learned that a Christmas wreath was likely to blame for 3 car accident on I-73/74 that shutdown the highway last weekend, causing congestion on US 220 from Randleman to Asheboro. According to a report by the North Carolina Highway Patrol all three vehicles involved were traveling northbound on I-73. The driver of the lead vehicle slowed down, due to a Christmas wreath in the roadway. The car behind failed to reduce speed and collided with rear passenger side of the first car. The collision spun the lead car into the left lane. A third driver swerved off the roadway to avoid crashing into lead car.
