ASHEBORO NC - A total of ten vehicles were involved in three separate, but related crashes, this morning on I-73 near Vision Drive. According to a press release by the NC Highway Patrol, at 6:19 AM on Monday, March 1st, 2021, troopers responded to I-73 near Vision Drive to a report of multiple vehicle accidents.  According to an official statement, the incident started when Ronald Wheeler, 60, of Albemarle N.C., was traveling north in a 2012 Peterbilt tractor-trailer in the left lane. (Trexler Trucking, Inc. is listed as the registered owner). Deizer Hernandez, 27, of Biscoe N.C., was traveling north in a 2005 Nissan passenger car in the right lane. On the agenda; impacts from COVID-19, updates on projects, repairs, new animals, and budgets, as well as an increase in admission prices. Admission Rebounding Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people who visited the zoo plummeted in 2020. The initial phases of the state's stay at home order went into effect between March and June when attendance is typically at its highest. According to a press release by the Asheboro Police Department, on Sunday, February 7, 2021, at 2:13 AM, Asheboro Police Officers responded to 408 E. Salisbury Street for a subject who had been shot. Officers on scene learned that the crime scene was located at 612 Farr Street in Asheboro. Evidence located at the crime scene lead investigators to believe a violent crime had occurred at the location and began to treat the case as a homicide. Seventeen-year-old Payton is being relocated from the Memphis Zoo as part of its breeding efforts. Payton was named after Walter Payton – the late running back for the Chicago Bears NFL team. He was born on was born Nov. 8, 2003, at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago but was moved to the Memphis Zoo in 2006. “Seeing Payton leave is bittersweet. ASHEBORO NC [ARCHIVED] - Norfolk Southern began repairs on tracks through downtown Asheboro Monday. Crossings between Church St and Fayetteville St at Academy St, Wainman St, and Kivett St were closed on Monday and Tuesday. This work is part of Norfolk Southern’s annual maintenance program to ensure safe and efficient operations in the communities we serve, said Rachel Bradshaw a Manager Media Relations with the Norfolk Southern Corporation.  According to an e-mail from Bradshaw on Tuesday evening work is expected to be complete in the next day or two, depending on weather and unforeseen delays.

ASHEBORO NC - Asheboro Mini Golf has been around for over 60 years, and after an especially rough year, its owner is asking the community for help. For the last four years, David Gregor has been running the mini-golf course located on S Fayetteville St. "It has been a staple in this community," said Gregor on his GoFundMe page. He describes it as a skill-based golf course. "I took over the business in 2016 and started off being a big part of this wonderful community. We have done things like giving the county library system 2,000 free games to give children who complete their weekly reading during the summer reading program.
