According to a press release from the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on September 18th, 2023, investigators received a report of embezzlement at Uwharrie Charter Elementary School located in Asheboro, NC. (Acme News Archive) ASHEBORO, N.C. (NC ZOO)-– The North Carolina Zoo is heartbroken to announce the untimely death of Fenn, the beloved six-month-old giraffe calf, whose birth and presence at the Zoo delighted individuals around the world. A grief counselor has been brought in to support staff members as they navigate the emotions associated with this tragic loss. Fenn was nursing when he became unexpectedly startled by another giraffe. ASHEBORO N.C. - The community is coming together to support a local family after their 10-year-old son was seriously injured in a house fire that destroyed the family home.  On December 8th, 2023, at 2:50 a.m. the Burroughs’ family home on Mountain Creek Rd. caught fire. At the time, Kevin and Shauna Burroughs were home asleep with their two children, 15-year-old daughter, Kamdyn and 10-year-old son, Chevy.  According to stories shared by family and friends with local media outlets, Shauna was able to pull Kamdyn out through a window. [Scott Pelkey | North State Journal] ASHEBORO N.C. - No injuries were reported last night after fire crews responded to a fire at a duplex in Asheboro.  At 10:16 p.m. on December 12th, 2023, Asheboro Fire and Rescue was dispatched to a reported apartment fire at 617 S Church St.  The first unit arrived on scene just two minutes later and found a working fire in a small duplex. Fire fighters located and extinguished a fire in one of the apartments and ventilated the building. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, on November 26th, 2023, deputies responded to a reported robbery on NC Hwy 134, in Asheboro. The victim told investigators that he was asked by someone he knew to meet in the parking lot of a business and that when he arrived, he was robbed by two males and two females. The victim also reported that one of the male suspects fired a single round from a handgun at him during the robbery. Fire Hose - Stock Photo (Acme News Archive) ASHEBORO N.C. - No one was injured during a commercial fire at Georgia Pacific Wednesday evening, according to Asheboro Fire & Rescue Department.  On Wednesday November 29th, 2023, at 7:40 p.m. crews from the Asheboro Fire and Rescue Department responded to Georgia Pacific, located at 200 McDowell Rd, for a report of a commercial fire.  According to information released by the department, the first unit arrived on scene just three minutes after dispatch to find a small fire in a cardboard cutting machine.  Firefighters were able to gain access to, and extinguish, the fire by 9:19 pm.  In total seven units, consisting of seventeen personnel from Asheboro Fire & Rescue were on scene, along with a Randolph Count...

ASHEBORO N.C. - The U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of North Carolina has charged an Asheboro man with possession of a machine gun. According to court documents, 23-year-old, Keandre Baretta Legrand, of Randolph County, was charged today with unlawful possession of a machine gun and illegal possession of a firearm by a felon stemming from an incident which occurred on September 13th, 2022.  That case is being investigated by the Asheboro Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and is being prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Mary Ann Courtney. ASHEBORO N.C. - A suspect led Asheboro police on a brief chase before crashing into several vehicles at a local auto repair shop and fleeing the scene earlier this week.  According to a report from the Asheboro Police Department, in the early morning hours of November 15th, 2023, at around 2:30 a.m., an officer on patrol attempted to pull over a silver in color passenger car on E Presnell St. Police say the driver failed to stop leading to a short vehicle chase.  That chase ended after the driver lost control and crashed into several vehicles at Goldston’s Auto Repair on Gold Hill Rd.
