NWS Warns of Freezing Conditions in Randolph County for Tuesday Night

ASHEBORO N.C. - The National Weather Service Office in Raleigh has issued a Freeze Watch for Randolph County for Late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning with temperatures expected to dip into the low 30's. According to forecasters at the National Weather Service Office in Raleigh, a cold front will move through the region tonight, followed by light rain from an upper disturbance overnight through Tuesday evening. High pressure will then build into the area behind the cold front, bringing the coldest air so far this season. Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 possible in Randolph and surrounding counties late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning. Frost and freeze conditions could kill crops, other sensitive vegetation and possibly damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. UP...

[Scott Pelkey | North State Journal] ASHEBORO N.C. - A driver crashed into the Golden Corral in Asheboro Saturday evening, injuring one person inside the restaurant.  On Saturday October 28th, 2023, just before 6 p.m. emergency crews were dispatched to the Golden Corral in Asheboro, located at 1070 E Dixie Dr., for a report of a vehicle that had crashed into the building.  According to a crash report by the Asheboro Police Department, a 79-year-old driver of a 2005 Ford Focus was attempting to park her vehicle when she “accidently pressed the accelerator instead of the brake,” causing the vehicle to strike the front of the restaurant.  One person inside the business was struck by the front end of the vehicle and debris from the structure and was transported to an...

In a press release, the North Carolina Zoo announced that on October 25th, 2023, Payton, the Zoo’s male polar bear, had died while being transported to the Louisville Zoo in Kentucky. According to the N.C. Zoo, an experienced care team, left the North Carolina Zoo with Payton, performing routine checks on the 1,000-pound polar bear during the trip. “On the second check, less than two hours away from the North Carolina Zoo, the care team found Payton non-responsive. ASHEBORO N.C. - Just before 4 p.m. Thursday afternoon, fire crews with the Asheboro Fire Rescue Department responded to 1233 N Fayetteville St for a report of a vehicle on fire inside of a bay at a mechanic shop. According to a press release, AFRD units arrived on scene at 3:50 p.m. to find a truck on fire inside a building. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and set up ventilation to clear the building of smoke. The cause of the incident was unintentional, and damages were estimated at $3,000. RANDLEMAN N.C. - A man who was arrested on an outstanding warrant received an additional larceny charge after deputies say he stole a pair of cuffs from the patrol car he was being held in. On October 20th, 2023, a deputy with the Randolph County Sheriff's Office responded to Camellia Ln., in Randleman, for a report of an assault. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, the responding deputy met with the caller, Jeffrey Corum, and discovered he had an outstanding warrant for felony charges. Corum was escorted to the location of the assault in the patrol vehicle and asked to stay in the car while the deputy spoke to the parties involved. 1-130th Attack Battalion - AB (via Facebook) ASHEBORO N.C. - Last week several residents across Randolph County witnessed the North Carolina National Guard's newest Apache Attack Helicopter as it flew over parts of Randolph County as part of a routine training flight. According to aircraft tracking data, just after 8 p.m., on Thursday, October 19th, 2023, a Boeing AH-64E Apache Guardian took off from RDU and flew to Randolph County. Once here, the aircraft flew around an area between Seagrove and Asheboro near Old State Highway 13 at between 1,200 and 2,000 feet, before flying around New Hope Church Rd and Denton areas before returning to RDU. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) school bus accidents account for less than 1% of all traffic fatalities. While that 'less than 1%' is a national figure, here in NC, the data backs up that number. Using crash report numbers from the N.C. TRINITY N.C. - A driver is facing felony drug charges and misdemeanor DUI and gun charges after police say they found him and his passenger asleep at an intersection in a running vehicle. On October 20th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff's Office responded to the intersection of NC Hwy 62 and Surrett Dr., in Trinity, for a welfare check on a vehicle stopped at an intersection with the driver slumped over at the wheel. According to a press release from the Sheriff's Office, when the deputy approached the vehicle they smelled the "strong odor of marijuana and alcohol emitting from the vehicle and an open bottle of alcohol was observed in the backseat of the vehicle." ASHEBORO N.C. - The city of Asheboro has announced they will be conducting smoke testing of the Sanitary Sewer System in Dixieland Acres and Surrounding areas starting today. In a notice on the city's website, the City of Asheboro says city personnel will be performing sanitary sewer system inspection tests in the Dixieland Acres and surrounding area beginning the week of October 23 (weather permitting). Affected areas generally are between E. Dixie Drive, Zoo Parkway from Atlantic Avenue to Pine Grove Drive, and extending northeast to Timber Lane and Mackie Avenue.
