Human Remains Found In Randolph County Identified

ASHEBORO N.C. – Human remains found in Randolph County earlier this year have been identified as a missing 34 year-old Asheboro man.

Michael Dwayne Wilkerson, age 34, was last seen by family on September 15th, 2011, in the area of Burney Road and New Hope Church Road in Asheboro.. Police say they located a wrecked pickup truck that same day which had Wilkerson’s cell phone in it but there was no one in or around the totaled truck. The Sheriff’s Office says the last call made on that cell phone wasphone had been made about 2:30 am. A highway patrol trooper arrived on the several hours later at around 5:15 am after a passerby reported the wreck.

Michael Dwayne Wilkerson was officially reported missing on September 24, 2011

On March 6, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of New Hope Church Rd, after human remains were located in a wooded area. The remains were collected and sent to the North Carolina state medical examiner’s office for identification.

Today in a press release the Sheriff’s Office says their Criminal Investigations Division received confirmation on March 23, 2022 from the state crime lab that the DNA examined from the remains were that of Mr. Michael Dwayne Wilkerson. The family has been notified and the cause of death and investigation is still ongoing.
