Suspect Wanted after Dumping Passenger and Vehicle while Running from Police

ASHEBORO N.C. – Police are looking for a wanted suspect who allegedly stole internet and telephone lines then fled from police earlier this week on Zoo Parkway.

On June 20th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Zoo Parkway, in Asheboro, after being notified of a suspicious vehicle in the area.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies located the vehicle on the right shoulder of Zoo Parkway with a male subject standing near the front passenger side of the vehicle and a female in the passenger seat. By that time, the deputy turned around to get behind the suspect vehicle they had also turned around and were headed back toward the deputy.

The deputy stopped in the roadway and the vehicle pulled up beside the deputy and stated the car was having mechanical issues. The Sheriff’s Office says the deputy recognized the driver as Charles Anthony Cox who had eleven active warrants for his arrest.

According to a press release, the deputy asked Cox to pull into Rainbow Loop Road but instead Cox rapidly accelerated and passed Rainbow Loop Rd continuing east on Zoo Parkway. Sheriff’s Deputies caught up with Cox and tried to get him to pull over but police say Cox continued to accelerate to flee.

Upon approaching Happy Hollow Road, Cox stopped on the shoulder of the road and the female passenger exited. The driver then rapidly accelerated again on Zoo Parkway but jumped a ditch and drove into pasture.

The deputy went to the intersection of Happy Hollow Rd. and Zoo Parkway to see if the vehicle would come back out on either of the roads. The female that exited the vehicle earlier, was located walking down Happy Hollow Rd. and contact was made with her. She was detained and identified as Stephanie Renee Caviness.

Additional deputies arrived and located the vehicle in the pasture but did not locate Cox.
