ASHEBORO N.C. – Asheboro Police are seeking help from the public to identify the driver of a vehicle who allegedly struck a pedestrian crossing the street downtown and fled the scene yesterday evening.
At around 6 p.m. on Aug 23rd, 2023, emergency crews were called to 23 S Fayetteville St, in Asheboro for a pedestrian that was struck by a vehicle.
Crews arrived to find a pedestrian lying in the crosswalk near the Magnolia 23 restaurant with witnesses in the roadway trying to assist him.
According to several of those witnesses, the vehicle that struck the man made a left from S Fayetteville St on to Sunset Ave and fled the scene.
The victim was transported by Ash-Rand EMS to a local hospital with non-life threating injuries.
Today, the Asheboro Police Department released surveillance photos on Facebook and are asking for help from the public to identify the driver.
The post says “there appears to be light damage to the front right corner and several witnesses report seeing a large white or yellow sticker in the back glass. There may be a temporary plate on the vehicle according to one witness. UPDATE 8/25/23 2PM – It didn’t take long for officers to identify and arrest the driver of the vehicle that struck a pedestrian and fled the scene earlier this week.
According to an arrest report from the Asheboro Police Department, on Aug 24th, 2023, officers arrested 36-year-old, Xavier Jermaine Wilhite of Asheboro and charged him with felony hit and run causing injury, misdemeanor driving with license revoked, and he was also issued a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian.
Wilhite was given a $2,500 secured bond and was set to appear in Randolph County District Court on Aug 25th, 2023.
