TRINITY N.C. – Five individuals are facing multiple charges after the Sheriff’s Office says they were found squatting/trespassing at a home in Trinity.
On January 21st. 2024, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to Millers Mill Rd., Trinty, in for a report of trespassing. When deputies arrived, the caller told them that several individuals were living inside the vacant residence without authorization and wished them to be removed.
According to a press release, after several announcements requesting occupants to exit, the property owner provided the key for entry. Upon entry, the deputies continued to announce their presence and requested the occupants exit. During this time one male occupant, identified as Jeffrey Laneau Smith, exited the residence, and was detained.
K9 Frank was deployed throughout the residence and several other occupants were located. John Matthew Rushford, Angela Stone Hulin, Caylan Renee Hulin, and Charles Paul Thompson were all detained and removed from inside the residence.
During a search of the home, deputies say they located counterfeit currency and suspected Fentanyl. All the suspects were ordered not to return to the property on Millers Mill Rd.
Following the investigation, the residence was secured, and the arrestees were transported to the Randolph County Detention Center. The magistrate found probable cause and the subjects were charged as follows:
John Matthew Rushford
- Felony first-degree trespassing/squatting
- Felony possession 5+ counterfeit tools
- Felony possession schedule II-controlled substance
- Misdemeanor breaking or entering
- Misdemeanor resisting a public officer
He was also served with Probation/Parole violations. He received a $190,000 total secured bond and a first appearance was set for January 24, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
Angela Aline Stone Hulin
- Felony possession of firearm by felon
- Felony first-degree trespassing/squatting
- Felony possession of methamphetamine
- Felony possession of heroin
- Felony possession 5+ counterfeit tools
- Two counts of felony probation violation
- Misdemeanor breaking or entering
- Misdemeanor possession of marijuana up to ½ oz.
- Misdemeanor possession of marijuana paraphernalia
- Misdemeanor resisting public officer.
She received a $225,000 total secured bond with a first appearance set for January 23, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
Caylan Renee Hulin
- Felony first-degree trespassing/squatting
- Misdemeanor breaking or entering
- Misdemeanor resisting public officer
She received a $150,000 secured bond and her first appearance was set for January 23, 2024, in Randolph County District Court.
Jeffrey Laneau Smith
- Misdemeanor resisting public officer
- Misdemeanor second-degree trespassing
He was issued a written promise to appear in Randolph County District Court on January 23, 2024.
Charles Paul Thompson
- Misdemeanor resisting public officer
- Misdemeanor second-degree trespassing
He was issued a written promise to appear in Randolph County District Court on January 23, 2024.
