ASHEBORO N.C. – Randleman Police and Randolph County EMS responded to a vehicle crash Sunday night where one person died.

Today in a press release, Steven Leonard, Chief of Police for the Randleman Police Department says that 21-year-old, Stacie Nicole Luther of Randleman, was traveling west on W. Academy Street toward Stout Street when she passed a Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy traveling in the same direction.

That deputy said that as Luther’s vehicle attempted to pass him, he witnessed the vehicle lose traction on the rain covered road and cross the centerline before regaining control. As Luther continued to accelerate and pull away from the deputy, the deputy activated his emergency lights and siren, attempting to stop Luther.

Luther lost control of the vehicle after passing the Stout Street intersection causing the vehicle to run off the roadway to the left striking a group of trees. The force of the impact caused the wheel assembly to break away striking an on-coming vehicle. No one was injured in the second vehicle.

Speed and weather conditions are contributing factors in the crash. Luther was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
