ASHEBORO N.C. – Crews are working to clear the scene of a serious rollover accident on I-74 that is causing delays.
This morning at around 10 a.m. emergency crews from Guil-Rand and Sophia Fire Departments along with Randolph County EMS responded to I-74 E near Cedar Square Rd for a report of a vehicle off the roadway.
According to a post on Facebook by Guil-Rand Fire Department, crews arrived to find a rollover accident down an embankment involving three patients. “Crews worked swiftly together to extricate patients and transfer care over to EMS,” said the department in the post.
Photos from the scene indicate at least one person may have been airlifted from the scene. The condition of the patients is not known currently.
According to NC DOT, all but one lane of the Interstate was closed and was set to re-open at 1 p.m.
The news desk has reached out to the N.C. Highway Patrol for more information about this incident and will provide an update as more information is made available.
UPDATE 7/31/23 2:30 PM – According to the North Carolina Dept of Transportation, all lanes on I-74 E have reopened after Exit 79 (Cedar Square Rd).
UPDATE 8/1/23 4PM – Today we are learning more about a single vehicle accident on I-74 E near Cedar Square Rd that left one person dead and sent two others to the hospital.
According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, on July 31st, 2023, at 9:53 am, Troopers responded to a report of a single vehicle accident on I-74 E, near Cedar Square Rd.
An official with the Highway Patrol says that 42-year-old, Mike Church from Ramseur, was traveling East on I-74 in a 1998 Honda passenger car when he traveled off the roadway to the right, collided with a guardrail, and continued into a wooded area where the vehicle rolled over coming to a rest on its side.
Church was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Two passengers were in the car at the time of the crash and according to Randolph County EMS one passenger was airlifted from the scene to a local trauma center, and the other was transported to a local hospital non-emergency by ground.
It is not known at this time why Church left the roadway, and the Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the accident.
