ASHEBORO N.C. - A period of light freezing rain this morning has triggered closing and delays across Randolph County. As of this morning both Asheboro City Schools as well as Randolph County Schools have announced they will be closed today. Randolph Community College is set to operate on a two hour delay. RCAT for Randolph County has also announced that they will not be operating today. Thompson began working at the Randolph County 9-1-1 center in 2013 where he was known for his unique deep voice and playful sense of humor. Due to COVID restrictions the family decided to do a virtual service so all may honor him. (NC ZOO) – With recently confirmed cases of avian flu in wild birds found in eastern North Carolina, the North Carolina Zoo is taking the precautionary measure of closing its Aviary habitat to the public. For birds, Avian flu is a highly contagious viral disease that can affect several species of birds, including domestic poultry and wild birds. ASHEBORO N.C. - Overnight a winter weather system dropped 1-2.5 inches of snow across Randolph County and wreaked havoc on roadways. The snow combined with already wet roads and overnight lows that dipped down below 10 degrees created treacherous driving conditions. In Moore county the Sandhills Sentinel reported several vehicles overturned including a NCDOT snow plow and a FEDEX delivery van. Here in Randolph County impacts have been minimal. Percriptitation was almost all snow with very little in the way of sleet or freezing rain. Unlike the last snow storm this one left several inches of alight powdery snow perfect for building a snowman . Crews were clearing roads as soon as snowfall stopped at 4am. Some of the animals who were able to brave the cold were able to take opportunity to enjoy the snow, including the Red River Hog who came out this morning to find a snowman in the habitat. At around 1pm DOT crews were working to clear snow from the 73./74 interchange at Sunset Ave, but DOT is still reporting all interstates, highways, and roads in Randolph as "Covered With Snow/Ice". SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT Black ice expected from late this evening through Tuesday morning Temperatures will quickly fall below freezing after sunset this evening. Lingering wet roads due to snow melt will result in black ice as the liquid re-freezes. Black ice is difficult to see. Use caution while traveling. Now, just hours before snow and sleet are set to start, new forecasts are changing the amount of snow and ice we can expect, with warnings of widespread power outages and treacherous travel conditions. The Asheboro Copperheads announced the re-branding this week, Starting immediately the team will be the Asheboro ZooKeepers. The website for the team has already made the switch, including a special site just for announcing the name change.The teams colors which were burnt orange and black are changing to khaki, brown, black, and jungle green.
