Photo by: Acme News Archive ASHEBORO NC - A suspect with active warrants was able to elude police after a short vehicle chase Thursday afternoon. According to a police report from the Asheboro Police Department an officer stopped a white Toyota Rav4 at the intersection of Dublin St and Parkview. The officer reported that the driver was known to have a warrant for his arrest. When the officer asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle the suspect instead step off leading officers on a short vehicle chase before bailing out on foot on Kemp Blvd. Officers searched the area but were unable to located the suspect, No injuries were reported.

ASHEBORO NC - On Tuesday September 14th, just after Noon the Asheboro Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial fire at the Central Gymnasium in Asheboro. When they arrived the saw smoke coming from the building but according to Capt Joines with the Asheboro Fire Dept instead of fire they found vandalism. According to Asst Chief Brown with the Asheboro Police Dept evidence and witnesses pointed to several juveniles breaking out the panel at the front of the gym and setting off two fire extinguishers inside the gym. A CSI detective responded to the scene and collected the extinguishers so they could be processed. Asst Chief Brown says the case has been assigned to a detective. According to a press release on September 12th, 2021, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area of Davis Country Rd., after getting a call that a suspect was actively stealing a forklift. Deputies arrived in the area and say they located the forklift traveling on Branson Davis Rd. toward Hwy 311 and were able to pull the driver over at the intersection of Branson Davis Rd. and Knoll Dr. Police identified the suspect as Robert Wayne Baxter who was placed under arrest and transported to the Randolph County Jail. ASHEBORO NC - The Randolph County Sheriff's Office announced they made arrest in two cases involving sex crimes against children earlier this month. According to a press release by the Sheriff's Office, the Criminal Investigation Division Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) received information that an individual by the name of Aaron Lee Barrett was possessing/distributing numerous child pornography files. Detectives initiated an investigation and on September 2, 2021, Mr. Barrett was taken into custody. Barrett was charged with ten counts of Felony Second Degree Exploitation of a Minor. ASHEBORO NC (ACME NEWS) - Police are investigating a shooting that occured in earlier this afternoon in Asheboro. Police, CSI, and detectives are actively investigating the scene of a shooting at the intersection of S McCrary St and Dixon Ave. According to an official with the Asheboro Police Department two males had an argument on Dixon Avenue in Asheboro after approaching each other on the street.  Police say one of the males produced a gun and fired multiple shots at the other.  The victim fled the scene and officers say they do not believe he was hit. Officers have a juvenile suspect detained and they say they are continuing to gather information. ASHEBORO NC - Two men have been arrested for possessing and distributing child pornography following an investigation by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office.  In a press release the Sheriff’s Office says their Criminal Investigation Division Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) received information that an individual by the name of James Ben Card was possessing/distributing child pornography on social media. Detectives began investigating and were able to obtain a search warrant which they executed on August 19, 2021, at the residence. According to witnesses the driver left the roadway and struck a street sign before plowing through a small building on display at Modular Home Outlet located at 175 NC Hwy 49 in Asheboro. Police identified the driver as Jose Franciso Gomez from Boone NC. Gomez was evaluated by Randolph County EMS on scene and released to Asheboro Police officers to perform a field sobriety test.
