Wednesday afternoon, May 3rd, 2023, Asheboro City Schools held a ribbon cutting to officially unveil the new and improved home of the Blue Comets to elected officials, school system leadership, and members of the media. Construction of Asheboro High School began in 1949 and opened for students beginning with the 1950-1951 school year. The building has become somewhat of a historical icon in Asheboro. Armed Altercation Triggers School Lockdown

ASHEBORO - An altercation on Albemarle Road involving a gun triggered a lock down at two Asheboro schools. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department, on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at approximately 2:25 PM, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to the 500 block of Albemarle Road after receiving a call about an armed person. The callers reported an altercation between multiple people, with at least one who was armed with a handgun. Asheboro High School, South Asheboro Middle School were placed on lockdown and an officer was posted at the nearby child care facility. Those protest were in support of Ever Lopez, a student who was at the the center of a viral controversy after he was denied his diploma by Asheboro High School for wearing a Mexican flag at the graduation ceremony.
