According to the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, on May 7th, 2022, deputies, and first responders were called to the area of Dawson Miller Rd., and US 220 Business in Asheboro for an accidental gunshot wound involving a juvenile. ASHEBORO N.C. (NC SHP) – Two cars stopped after a minor crash on I-73/74 this morning were struck by a third vehicle bringing the early morning commute on the interstate to a crawl. According to a press release from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NC SHP), at 7:26 am on Friday, May 6th 2022, troopers responded to the report of a crash that occurred on I-73 (southbound) near Presnell Street in Randolph County. The NC SHP was already sending Troopers to another accident in the southbound lanes of I-73, inside Asheboro City limits. That first accident had started to backup traffic on the interstate. (NC ZOO) - The North Carolina Zoo sadly announces the death of Nori, an 11-year-old member of the chimpanzee troop who was euthanized on Monday after a period of declining health. Nori, who was born at the Zoo on August 2, 2010, was described by Zoo staff as quirky and full of sass. When Nori was born, keepers immediately noticed that her mother wasn't showing the appropriate maternal care she needed to survive. After observing this for a few days, the animal care team decided to pull her for hand-rearing. ASHEBORO N.C. - Asheboro police are investigating two calls for discharging firearms, including one where two vehicles were struck last Sunday and Monday. On April 24th 2022 just before 5 pm, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to Walnut St for a call about shots fired in the area. According to a report officers secured and searched the area but were unable to locate a suspect or victim. A witness on scene told police the incident had happened an hour prior and police ended up taking a report for documentation. The next day on April 25th 2022, at around 6:20 pm, officers were called to Loach st on the eastside of the city. ASHEBORO N.C. - Two separate homeowners caught burglary suspects red handed before they tried to flee and were arrested by police. On April 18, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office responded to McNeal St, in Asheboro for a report of a burglary in progress. Deputies say when they arrived the victim reported they arrived home to find a female inside the master bedroom of the home. The female suspect, whom the Sheriff’s Office identified as Traci Underwood Andrews, reportedly jumped from the bedroom window and fled on foot to ablack truck and tried to drive off through the yard but wrecked in a ditch on McMasters St. Police say they located the vehicle with Andrews still sitting inside. On April 22nd 2022, just after before 4 pm, fire crews from Asheboro, Ulah, and Eastside Fire Department's were dispatched to the Asheboro Recycling Center on Southmont Dr, in Asheboro for a report of a fire. When firefighters arrived they found a cargo container at the corner of the property ablaze. Smoke from the fire could be seen east of Asheboro. According to Samantha East, Public Information Officer with the Asheboro Fire Department crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported and the cause of fire is undetermined.

ASHEBORO N.C. - A woman is facing additional charges after she pepper sprayed an officer while being arrested on an outstanding warrant. On April 14, 2022, Asheboro Police Department arrested Kristi Jo Moss Hodge on multiple outstanding warrants and orders for arrest. Officers located evidence during the arrest that linked Hodge to an April 12th vehicle theft in Ramseur that the Randolph County Sheriff's Office was investigating. According to an official with the Asheboro Police Department, shortly after Hodge was placed into handcuffs she was able to slip her hand out of one of the cuffs and retrieve a pepper spray container from her bra area.
