ASHEBORO - An altercation on Albemarle Road involving a gun triggered a lock down at two Asheboro schools. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department, on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at approximately 2:25 PM, officers with the Asheboro Police Department responded to the 500 block of Albemarle Road after receiving a call about an armed person. The callers reported an altercation between multiple people, with at least one who was armed with a handgun. Asheboro High School, South Asheboro Middle School were placed on lockdown and an officer was posted at the nearby child care facility. Officers have located and detained individuals they believe to be involved in the original incident and the lockdown has been lifted. The investigation on scene is on-going. ...

The water main break caused a 5ft sinkhole to form at the base of the tower. That sinkhole formed directly under a cell tower utility building which caused it to fall into the hole. ASHEBORO NC - Ken Jennings, the man who won 74 consecutive game of Jeopardy! is set to speak in Asheboro this weekend. A recent rule change removed the five consecutive games limit for winners which led to Jennings going on a 74-game victory streak winning an estimated $2.52 million. In 2020, he beat out Brad Rutter and James Holzhauer in the “Jeopardy! The Greatest of All Time." The city says some customers may initially detect a slight increase in chlorine taste or smell as the switchover in treatment processes occurs. The change won't affect the majority of customers, but some customers that use city drinking water for special purposes (including kidney dialysis) may need to make adjustments. Roman Babakin / Adobe Stock ASHEBORO NC - The city of Asheboro announced that they recently requested and received funding from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to pay for the purchase and installation of a two-port Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station. The charging station will be located in the public parking lot behind City Hall, located at 146 North Church Street, and should be available for use later this year. Funding is through the Volkswagen Settlement and the state.

Board of Transportation has approved state and federal funding for safety and airfield improvement projects at 10 North Carolina airports. Totaling $12.75 million, the funds have been awarded for various projects to help airports increase capacity, attract new jobs and businesses to their communities, and improve safety for pilots and passengers. The board approved the funds during its March 4 meeting. ASHEBORO NC - A Florida man is in jail after kidnapping a woman at gunpoint and leading police in a high-speed chase vehicle chase Saturday afternoon. According to a press release from the Asheboro Police Department on Saturday, April 3rd, 2021, at around 1:42 PM, a 31-year-old female was kidnapped at gunpoint while sitting in a vehicle on Coleridge Rd in Asheboro. The suspect who police identified as 32-year-old Manuel Jesus Robles from Ocala, Florida, allegedly "forced the woman into a vehicle owned by the victim, which had been stolen earlier" according to a statement issued by the department.
