ASHEBORO N.C. - A Randolph County Deputy chased a vehicle on foot that was trying to flee and arrested the driver who was likely feeling a bit of déjà vu. On August 21st, 2023, while performing routine patrol in the area of Little Gate Dr., in Asheboro, a deputy with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office spotted a vehicle parked beside the railroad tracks. According to a press release the deputy stopped to investigate and located a male subject, identified as Gregory Allen Walker, who was found asleep inside the vehicle. The North Carolina Zoo announced yesterday that they will be transferring their flock of 15 Chilean flamingos to the Greenville Zoo in South Carolina sometime at the end of September. "While it is sad to see the flamingos leave the Zoo, we are happy to know they will join a flock of 19 Chilean flamingos already at the Greenville Zoo," said the Zoo on Facebook. On August 20th, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Interdiction Team conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 85 north near mile marker 109, in Trinity. During that stop, officers say they located approximately forty-four pounds of cocaine in the "trunk area" of the vehicle. The driver, identified by the Sheriff's Office as 60-year-old Antonio Argentine Shaw from Virginia, was arrested and has been charged with two counts of Felony Trafficking in Cocaine. According to a press release from the Randolph County Sherriff's Office, on August 7th, 2023, Mason Bryce Wooten was observed in surveillance footage striking a sprinkler head in his cell, setting off the system in his cell, at the Randolph County Jail. On June 2nd, 2023, the Zoo anounced the birth of three sand cat kittens. Several weeks later, in a press release, the zoo revealed the sexes of the kittens, one male and two females, as well as an online poll to allow the public to choose names for the tiny desert felines. SOPHIA N.C. - A local trucker has been charged by the North Carolina Highway Patrol, in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on NC 87 in Columbus County last week. According to a press release from the NC Highway Patrol, at 2:46 p.m. on Thursday, August 10th, 2023, Troopers responded to a crash on NC 87 near John L Riegel Road in Columbus County. Investigators say that Nicholas Reid Fellers, 28, from Sophia, N.C., was traveling south on NC 87, in a Freightliner box truck when he failed to reduce speed striking the rear of a tractor-trailer that had stopped due to road construction.
