ASHEBORO NC — It was quite the weekend for a local family after fire and rescue crews were called to help free a horse from a muddy pond. Aaliyah Ratcliffe had went to a family friend’s to purchase another horse and ended up also getting 7 yeay-old Rose as a rescue. “We are taking her on as pair.” said Ratcliffe, “I’m helping with the journey of getting her back to health.” Rose had only been in her new pasture for 30 minutes, “She was put in a small paddock that had a pond on one end” said Ratcliffe, “she tried to cross the grassy area of it, and I believe she didn’t think it was mush underneath.” Ratcliffe said the horse had only been stuck a few minutes before they noticed and started calling for help. “We first called a lot of our neighbors”, Ratcliffe said, “everyone has horse e...

The North Carolina Zoo will host their annual Halloween event “Boo at the NC Zoo” two weekends in October this year. Boo will be held Saturdays and Sundays on Oct. 16, 17, 23, and 24, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on all days. Boo at the NC Zoo is a family-friendly daytime event and socially distanced for everyone's fun and safety. There will be trick-or-treating at stations throughout the park, a souvenir bag, live entertainment, animal encounters, Halloween-themed photos, and costume contests. If you live in Randolph County chances are you found the first edition of the Randolph Hub in your mailbox last week. “We printed 46,238 for all residences in every ZIP code but the ones for Archdale and Trinity” said Ray Criscoe, the owner, publisher, and editor of the Randolph Hub. The paper was mailed to most every household with a 27203, 27205, 27317, 27350, 27298, 27355, 27248, 27316 and 27314 zip code. (Criscoe says he hopes to add Archdale & Trinity at a later date). Photo Provided by NC Zoo ASHEBORO NC – Last week the North Carolina Zoo celebrated 20 years of operating it’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. The Valerie H. Schindler Wildlife Rehabilitation Center (WRC) at the NC Zoo provides free, professional veterinary and rehabilitation services to sick, injured, or orphaned native North Carolina animals. The goal for the animals they treat is to be returned to the wild in a condition that will optimize their chances of survival after release. According to the NC Zoo the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center is the only one of its kind in U.S. zoos. The WRC is not open to the public, the animals in its care need as little human contact as possiable for a successful release into the wild. ASHEBORO NC - Tuesday and Wednesday are setting up to be a wet one, thanks to Tropical Storm Fred who’s heading our way. What remains of Tropical Storm Fred will slowly move through the southeastern part of NC on Tuesday. Fred will bring with it heavy rains up in the mountains, but in the Piedmont we are only expecting a few scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rain and winds may be heavy at times with some possibility of localized severe storms and flooding. Again on Wednesday, the remnants of Fred will keep moving slowly to the northeast as the storms clear out of the area late on Wednesday. ASHEBORO NC – Last week the NC shared the sad news of the loss of two of its animals. Paco On Aug 11th 2021, the NC Zoo announced on Facebook the passing of Paco the harbor seal. The cause of death had not yet been determined not yet determined, but the post shared to Facebook noted Paco did have a large lung mass. Paco lived at the NC Zoo’s Rocky Coast exhibit for 13 years.
