(Scott Pelkey / North State Journal) ASHEBORO N.C. - An evening thunderstorm brought with it heavy rain, vehicle crashes, downed trees, and power outages. Just before 6pm, the National Weather Service in Raleigh issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Randolph County after radar indicated a severe thunderstorm near Lexington, moving northeast at 30 mph with 60 mph wind gusts and quarter size hail. Just as the storm was leaving Asheboro, Westside Fire Dept, Asheboro Fire Dept, Randolph County EMS, and Ash-Rand Rescue were dispatched to a vehicle crash on I-73/74 SB just south of Spero Rd for a vehicle crash with two occupants pinned-in. ASHEBORO N.C. - Earlier today we reported on data from the Sheriff's Office showing in March of this year the agency investigated eight vehicle thefts, making up almost half of the reported vehicle thefts so far this year. As a follow up to that article (which you can read here), we are detailing just a few of the cases we are aware of from March. In early February detectives with the Criminal Interdiction Team were investigating two reports of stolen vehicles on Oakland Ave, in Asheboro. ASHEBORO N.C. - "We're Expecting," that was the announcement from the North Carolina Zoo on social media as they prepare for a new giraffe calf as soon as this spring. In a post on Facebook on March 30th, 2023, the NC Zoo said that Jack and Leia, two of the Zoo's giraffes are expecting parents. A baby giraffe, also called a calf, may look small, but when they are born, they are up to six feet tall and weigh anywhere from 110-150 lbs. Mother giraffes carry their baby through a gestation period of 15 months (400-470 days), which is necessary to allow the calf to mature so that it can stand, walk, feed, and keep up with the pack within just an hour or so of being born. ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man is in jail after being charged with rape by the Sheriff's Office. On December 14, 2022, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sexual crime. In a press release the Sheriff's Office says, "following a lengthy investigation by the Criminal Investigations Division, charges were sought against Christopher James Hazelwood of Asheboro, for felony 2nd degree forcible rape." The Sheriff's Offices' Criminal Apprehension Team located Hazelwood, on March 29th, 2023, during the execution of a search warrant. Hazelwood was arrested and transported to the Randolph County Jail, where he was served the warrant. The magistrate issued a $150,000 secured bond. On April 1st, 2023, just after 7pm, Asheboro Fire and Rescue (AFRD) was dispatched to a report of a fire at the Asheboro East Power Substation on Spring St. Randolph County Emergency Services advised responding units that 911 callers had reported hearing an explosion, followed by a power outage in the area. ASHEBORO N.C. - Sheriff's deputies responding to a burglary of a vehicle ended up on a manhunt today that captured one suspect while another remains on the loose. Earlier today, April 3, 2023, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office says they were called to Cameron Dr, in Asheboro, for a report of a burglary of a vehicle. According to a press release, when deputies arrived, they gathered information and determined two suspects had fled the area just prior to arrival; one into the woods to the west of the residence and the other male walking south on Cameron Dr. toward Robbins Cir. ASHEBORO N.C. - A surveyor working in North Asheboro earlier this week was robbed at gunpoint according to police. According to a report by the Asheboro Police Department on March 20th, 2023, at 11:57pm, officers responded to Ravenwood Dr located in the Franklin Village Mobile Home Park off North Fayetteville St in North Asheboro after receiving a report of a robbery. Officers spoke with the victim who stated he was working as a surveyor in the area for USIC, an underground utility company. The worker told police he was approached by two white males who pulled out a gun and held him at gunpoint while they stole several personal items and a bookbag containing survey equipment. ASHEBORO NC - A local man is in jail awaiting a court date after being arrested last week following a search warrant at a home in Asheboro. On March 22nd, 2023, the Asheboro Police Departments VICE/ Narcotics Unit executed a search warrant at a home in Asheboro. During that search police say they located approximately 17.2 grams of crack cocaine, Suboxone strips, assorted drug paraphernalia, and $336. 92 in US currency. The homeowner, identified by police as Reginald Cleve Dunn was arrested and transported to the Randolph County where he was taken before &magistrate who found probable cause for his arrest for multiple drug related charges and was given a $50,000 secured bond.
