Photo Provided by: Randolph Community College ASHEBORO (Randolph Community College) — Randolph Community College recently gave approximately 200 students a fresh start by paying off outstanding debt, totaling nearly $113,000. Any student who was enrolled at the College between March 13, 2020 (the start of the COVID-19 pandemic) until the end of the Summer 2021 semester was eligible for the assistance. In addition to paying off outstanding student account balances, RCC has been able to help students through the pandemic by providing emergency financial assistance for such needs as food, housing, laptops, and internet access. (Scott Pelkey / Acme News) ASHEBORO NC - Today we learned that a Christmas wreath was likely to blame for 3 car accident on I-73/74 that shutdown the highway last weekend, causing congestion on US 220 from Randleman to Asheboro. According to a report by the North Carolina Highway Patrol all three vehicles involved were traveling northbound on I-73. The driver of the lead vehicle slowed down, due to a Christmas wreath in the roadway. The car behind failed to reduce speed and collided with rear passenger side of the first car. The collision spun the lead car into the left lane. A third driver swerved off the roadway to avoid crashing into lead car. ASHEBORO NC - A mother and her three children are safe today after being located in Wayne county following a statewide Amber alert.  On Monday, July 19, 2021, at just before 4 PM officers from the Asheboro Police Department were dispatched to 2421 North Meadows Loop about a missing person.  Olga Diego Hernandez’s family told officers they hadn’t seen her in approximately two months but within the past two days, they and other family members had received text messages from her which caused them to become concerned for her and the three children that were with her.   Detectives from the department’s Criminal Investigations Division opened an investigation and learned Olga Diego Hernandez was possibly in Wayne County, NC. ASHEBORO NC - The Sherriff's Office's Vice/Narcotics division executed two search warrants last week leading to two arrests. According to the Randolph County Sherriff's Office, on June 17, 2021, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office Vice/Narcotics Unit, along with the Urban Criminal Interdiction Team, concluded an investigation related to the distribution of Heroin in the Sophia / Randleman area. That investigation led to deputies conducting a traffic stop on a vehicle being driven by Alfredo Antonio Palacios, Jr. near Pineview St. in Asheboro, as well as a search warrant being executed on Palacios residence located on Old Marlboro Rd. in Sophia. The driver of a Jeep SUV was traveling west on Hoover Street with two dogs in the car. As she approached in the intersection of Hoover and Park Street the vehicle left the roadway on the left, went over the sidewalk, through a bush, and struck a home at the intersection of Hoover and N Park Street. ASHEBORO NC - Over the weekend, in a now-deleted Facebook post, Erick Hicks, a potential candidate for Randolph County Sherriff in 2022, called for federal immigration agents to come to the protests being held for at Asheboro High School.  Those protest were in support of Ever Lopez, a student who was at the the center of a viral controversy after he was denied his diploma by Asheboro High School for wearing a Mexican flag at the graduation ceremony.
