ASHEBORO NC - The Summer Concert Series will be returning in 2021 bring live music back to downtown Asheboro. The free concerts that take place every summer at Bicentennial park were canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions and while they are scheduled to return in 2021, so far their off to a rocky start.  The first concert scheduled for May 16th, 2021 had to be postponed. Jonathan Sermon the Recreation Services Director for the City of Asheboro Cultural & Recreation Services Division explained that the Governor’s order made it too difficult to hold the first concert. Roman Babakin / Adobe Stock ASHEBORO NC - The city of Asheboro announced that they recently requested and received funding from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality to pay for the purchase and installation of a two-port Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station. The charging station will be located in the public parking lot behind City Hall, located at 146 North Church Street, and should be available for use later this year. Funding is through the Volkswagen Settlement and the state.

On April 29th, 2021, at around 3:30 PM, first responders were called to a home on Miles Moffitt Rd. in Asheboro. Radio traffic from Randolph county 911 reported a three-year-old had been struck by a vehicle. Information later released by the Randolph County Sherriff's Office said the child was accidentally injured when an "inexperienced individual was moving a vehicle in the yard and the vehicle made contact with the child before eventually came to a stop after hitting the house causing structural damage." ASHEBORO NC - A woman is recovering from surgery after being shot by her husband in the parking lot of an Asheboro apartment complex.  Barry Lynn Baxter Jr According to information released by the Asheboro Police Department, on Wednesday, April 28th, 2021, officers with the Asheboro Police Department were dispatched to Ashewood Circle in reference to a report of a victim with an accidental gunshot wound. Officers found 55-year-old Deneene Lynn Baxter suffering from a gunshot wound. Officers rendered first aid at the scene and the victim was transported to a hospital in Greensboro where she underwent surgery and is recovering.  During the investigation, it was determined that the victim was shot by her husband, Barry Lynn Baxter, Jr., age 40. ASHEBORO NC - A murder suspect is in custody leading police on a high-speed chase through Randolph County overnight. According to a press release by the Asheboro Police Department, on Sunday, March 25, 2021, at 2:09 AM, officers were dispatched to 340 Brookside Drive in Asheboro for a call about an unknown medical situation. When officers arrived they discovered 55-year-old Sherrie Shaw deceased in the residence. Board of Transportation has approved state and federal funding for safety and airfield improvement projects at 10 North Carolina airports. Totaling $12.75 million, the funds have been awarded for various projects to help airports increase capacity, attract new jobs and businesses to their communities, and improve safety for pilots and passengers. Investigators with the Randolph County Sheriffs Office and Asheboro Police Department investigate a fatal shooting on Plummer St overnight. (Scott Pelkey / Acme News) ASHEBORO NC (ACME NEWS) - On Saturday, April 3, 2021, Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a shooting on Plummer Street in Asheboro. The arriving officers found three subjects at the home, all with gunshot wounds. According to a statement by the Randolph County Sherriff's Office, 27-year old Robert Lewis Spencer was pronounced dead at the scene. The two other subjects were transported to nearby trauma hospitals. One subject is currently in surgery and the other is in stable condition.
