ASHEBORO, N.C. (NC ZOO)– Today, the North Carolina Zoo announces the permanent closure of its Aviary Habitat. Built in the early 1980s, the 40-year-old domed structure requires significant repairs due to the effects of high humidity and wet conditions. The difficult decision to close and take down the habitat has been made by Zoo leadership and the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. "For 40 years, the Zoo's Aviary offered a special place to connect with nature," said North Carolina Zoo's Director Pat Simmons. "The free-flying birds and tropical plants served as an oasis for many people - guests and staff alike. ASHEBORO N.C. - A couple wanted for a carjacking in Craven county were arrested today in Franklinville after a 911 call for a suspicious person led deputies to them. According to a press release by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on April 15th, 2022, at around 8 am, deputies were dispatched to Millboro Rd in Franklinville for a call about a suspicious person. The caller told police that a male and female were on the front porch and they looked like the subjects that had been associated with an assault and carjacking in the New Bern area of Craven County. The Craven County Sheriff’s Office had issued warrants for both subjects for felony common law robbery, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and felony assault on a disabled person. According to a press release on April 6th, 2022, the Sheriff’s Office responded to West Main Street inFranklinville after getting a call about vandalism that occured at a church. ASHEBORO N.C. - A local man was arrested Sunday after police responded to a call about shots fired at the Randolph Inn in Asheboro. According to a press release by the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, on April 10th, 2022, police were dispatched to the area of Albemarle Rd after 911 caller reported someone was firing a gun. Units with the Asheboro Police Department arrived first at the Randolph Inn also responded. Police say they witnessed subjects fighting in the parking lot. The alleged assailant, identified in the press release as as Trevor Aaron Holmes, was detained. Victims reported that Holmes had been chasing them around the vehicle with a machete. (ACME NEWS) - Police are investigating how a local man who had been reported missing ended up deceased in a wooded area near an Asheboro apartment complex yesterday. On March 9th, 2022, around noon, patrol officers with the Asheboro Police Department were called to the 700 block of Breeze Hill Road, after getting a call about a missing person last seen in the area the day before. ASHEBORO N.C. - A woman was arrested after police say she set 5 separate fires in the Asheboro area that all occurred on the same day and in the same area. Police began investigating on March 3rd after fire crews and the Fire Marshal's Office called the Randolph County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigations and Crime Scene Division to the scene of a fire on Cedar Grove Drive Extension in Asheboro. Fire crews reported five separate and distinct fires with one spreading to a vacant outbuilding, a second fire ignited three vehicles and the three other fires burned wooded areas. In a press release the hospital says that "due to the decreased COVID-19 activity in the area and admission of COVID-19 patients to our inpatient areas, Randolph Health is implementing new visitation guidelines beginning on Tuesday, March 1, 2022 at 7 a.m." New Visitation Guidelines Visiting Hours will be from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.Visitors must 12 years of age or older.Visitors should enter the hospital through the Emergency Department. ASHEBORO N.C. - The Randolph County Sheriff's Office announced they have recently charged three individuals with sex offenses involving minors. Juan Jose Figueroa Jimenez Juan Jose Figueroa Jimenez was charged with felony crimes against nature and three counts of felony indecent liberties with a child after the Sheriff's Office received information about sexual offenses on December 15, 2021 that led them to start an investigation. On February 12, 2022, Figueroa-Jimenez was located, arrested and transported to the Randolph County Jail where he was given a $100,000 secured bond and a first appearance was set for February 14, 2022, in Randolph County District Court.
